Katey and I drove up to the North part of the Big Island with the intention of visiting some historical monument but failed to find anything resembling our intended site so we just loaded up at this local greasy spoon.

We moved on to the Black Sandy beach and walked down A muddy trail.
In 2012 we visited a similar black sandy beach. I for one could not tell the difference, but here are the photos to prove it.
Next we took the 19 road all the way to Waimea where we tried to eat at the Hawaiian style cafe. It closed at noon on Sunday so I decided to drive us east all the way to Hilo, much to the dismay of Catherine who claims her itinerary was not respected. Went to what's shakin for an avocado shake and fish burrito. Bought some lyche type fruit, An avacado the size of a small child's head and some papaya.

Drove the 200 road through the middle of the island and it was apparently repaved so it was smooth riding. The scenery on the Big Island changes dramatically. One minute, endless lava, next minute, fields of greenery and happily grazing future hamburger meat. This scene demanded a moment of silence.

I think we just drove home after this. Catherine was thoroughly pissed off I spontaneously decided to drive to Hilo, but her powers are quite limited, so I drove on. Here's the view from our balcony in the Waikaloa Vacation Club.
